Breast Cancer Screening

· Begin monthly breast self-examination at age 20.

· Have a clinical breast examination every 3 years between the ages of 20-39.

· Begin yearly mammogram and clinical breast exam at age 40.

Cervical Cancer Screening

· Annual Pap Test screening at age 18, or after the onset of sexual activity, whichever comes first.

Prostate Cancer Screening

· PSA (prostate-specific antigen) and DRE (digital rectal exam) tests should be offered annually to men beginning at age 50. Younger men at high risk (with a family history of prostate cancer) should be screened earlier.

Colon Cancer Screening

· Beginning at age 50, recommended screening includes three options:

      •  FOBT (fecal occult blood test) and sigmoidoscopy with FOBT repeated annually and sigmoidoscopy repeated every 5 years, or

Total colon examination with DCBE (double-contrast barium enema) every 5 to 10 years, or

Total colon examination with colonscopy every 10 years

People with a family history of colon cancer should check with their family physician about earlier screenings.

Other Screening Recommendations

· American Cancer Society recommends a cancer-related examination every 3 years for asymptomatic individuals between the ages of 20 and 39, and annually after age 40.

· In addition, the Society promotes self-examination of the skin and breasts, awareness of testicular cancer symptoms in young men, and periodic heath counseling, for example, about smoking cessation, diet and physical activity.
